Vadim Popov named Chairman of House of Representatives of Belarusian parliament

On October 2 at the seventh parliamentary session the Belarusian MPs elected Vadim Popov Chairman of the House of Representatives of Belarus’ National Assembly of the third convocation. Some 107 deputies voted by secret ballots. 94 Belarusian MPs supported the candidate of Vadim Popov and 13 voted against. Five deputies voted yes to the candidate of Sergei Gaidukevich and 102 voted against. Earlier Vadim Popov worked in the House of Representatives of the third convocation as the chairman of the permanent commission for international affairs and links with the CIS member states. In the House of Representatives of the second convocation he was the speaker of the lower chamber of the parliament. According to Vadim Popov, “the Belarusian MPs should continue improving the law making process”. The MP considers the work in the international arena as the second important area of activity. “There are positive changes but certain problems still remain. Attempts to apply double standards not only in respect of Belarus’ economy cause our serious concern,” said Vadim Popov. At the same time the multi-vector nature of Belarus’ policy produces economic results; Belarus is boosting the trade turnover with the EU countries. According to Vadim Popov, the Belarusian MPs are doing the right thing while establishing a legal environment for economic cooperation. “The deputies of the second convocation know me as the Chairman of the House of Representatives. We should continue fulfilling our major task – to preserve peace and order in the Belarusian society,” said Vadim Popov.
