The registration of candidates to deputies of local councils will end on December 14. After this the candidates will stump the country, said Nikolay Lozovik, secretary of the Belarus’ central election commission.
According to him, the competition is approximately 1,1 persons per mandate. All in all there are 24,397 applicants and 22,658 vacancies. Almost one half of the candidates have been picked up through citizens’ signature lists, another 10,014 candidates have been nominated by their labor collectives.
The biggest competition is expected at elections to the Minsk City Council with 237 candidates and 55 vacancies.
The elections to the local councils of deputies of the fifth convocation will be held on January 14, 2007. It is planned to staff 1,583 local councils of deputies. Most councils will be organized in Minsk oblast (345). There will be 255 of them in Brest oblast, 241 in Vitebsk oblast, 300 in Gomel oblast, 221 in Grodno oblast, 220 in Mogilev oblast and one in Minsk. There will be 6 oblast councils, one Minsk council, 118 regional councils, 13 town councils subordinate to oblast authorities, 14 town councils subordinate to regional authorities and 1,365 village councils.
