Providing Belarus’ border security should not hamper development of economic contacts with EU

Ensuring the border security of Belarus in the western direction should not create obstacles for economic entities of the European Union, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said when signing the resolution on the state border policy and ensuring the border security of the Republic of Belarus in 2008. “Today the EU is Belarus’ second largest economic partner while the economic interests are most important for us,” the President said. “Moreover, we do not need to expose ourselves to the criticism about “the lack of democracy” once again, Alexander Lukashenko said. The head of state noted that this year the resolution has been extended. “The matter concerns not only physical protection of the state border but ensuring security of the state in the western direction,” he said. The President also stressed that the resolution is based on the principles of national security and sovereignty. In turn, the chairman of the state border committee Major-General Igor Rachkovsky informed Alexander Lukashenko that the main goals set by the President before the state border committee were met last year: the quality protection of the state border was ensured, violations were timely detected and eliminated, the border crossing rules were simplified for the citizens of Belarus and other states. Comprehensive measures were taken to root out malfeasances in office.
