In 2005 Gomel oblast produced 8 thousand tons of corn, Alexander Lukashenko was informed while on a working trip to Gomel oblast. The president was reported that Gomel oblast virtually stopped buying corn seeds from Moldavia since their production at home is twice as cheap and the quality is just the same. Russian companies are very interested in purchasing Belarusian seeds.
