Belarus may export atomic electric power to compensate for imported natural gas price

After a nuclear power plant goes online in Belarus, atomic electric energy can be exported to compensate for the price for imported natural gas, Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Timoshpolsky said at a press conference today. In his words, Belarus is considering the possibility of exporting atomic electric power to other countries, including Russia, in order to compensate for the growing prices for the natural gas Belarus imports. Vladimir Timoshpolsky also remarked, the construction of the nuclear station should be performed energetically. “The more we delay the process, the more expensive the construction will be,” he said. Belarus plans to use atomic energy to substitute at least 10% of the conventional fuel and energy budget. The official also said, scientists had considered the possibility of building the nuclear station at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border. However, the Mogilev oblast remains the most prospective region for building the facility at present.
