Andrei Kunets of the town of Mozyr came second at the 4th Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2006. The contest took place in Bucharest (Romania) on December 2. Ten-year-old Mozyr resident Andrei Kunets received 12 points from Russia, Portugal, Malta and 10 points from Ukraine, Romania, and Sweden for singing his song Novyi Den (new day).
A short gap separated the talented Belarusian boy from the first place twin sisters Masha and Nastya Tolmachevs of Russia won with their song Vesenniy Dzhaz (spring jazz). The contest gathered representatives of 15 countries. Winner of last year Junior Eurovision Song Contest Kseniya Sitnik presented the cup to the Tolmachevs.
The contest was broadcast live by the First National TV Channel of Belarus and satellite TV channel Belarus TV, with commentaries by special correspondent of the TV News Agency of the Belarusian TV and Radio Company Denis Kuryan. In Belarus the results were voiced by student of Minsk State College No. 24 Yelizaveta Anton-Boichuk.
According to the rules of the contest, Belarusians could vote for any performer, except for one representing their own country. Belarus awarded 12 points to Russia and 10 points to Sweden. The top five consisted of Russia, Belarus, Sweden, Spain, and Serbia.
While in Bucharest, delegations of the fifteen countries participating in Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2006 had an extensive entertainment schedule. The kids travelled around the city, visited the Ancient Museum and the glass manufacturing museum, talked to Romanian school students. In the evenings participants of the contest familiarised with each other, performed their shows.
Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2006 was organised by the European Broadcasting Union in association with Romanian television TVR. Performers from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Macedonia, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Sweden took part in the contest.
