A. Kosinets: government finalizes draft national program on demographic security

In pursuance of the commission given by the head of state the government has finalized a draft national program on demographic security of Belarus. In the course of the meeting on the draft the president made remarks concerning two subprograms on scientific and information support to the demographic security program, deputy prime minister of this country Alexander Kosinets has told reporters today. According to the source, initially the government planned to allocate over Br2 billion for scientific and more than Br1 billion for information support to the program. “Additional reserves were found in the health ministry and other ministries concerned to reduce the costs”, the deputy prime minister said. Other subprograms of the document approved, the work started on February 9, he underlined. In 2006, the birth rate increased in Belarus by 6.4% and death rate fell by 2.4% as against 2005. Thus, the mortality rate was down by about 3,7 thousand people while the birth rate was 5,7 thousand babies up. The positive migration surplus made up 5,6 thousand. “Figuratively, last year we preserved a small regional center with the population of about 14,800 people. We will continue working on the problem”, Alexander Kosinets said.
