International Chernobyl conference moves to Gomel

Participants of the international conference “20 years after Chernobyl. A strategy of recovery and sustainable development of the affected regions” have arrived today from Minsk to Gomel to continue the work in the oblast center. The officials who spoke at a plenary sitting feature chairman of the Gomel oblast executive committee Alexander Yakobson, chairman of the presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich, UN resident/coordinator in Belarus Cihan Sultanoglu and representatives of the frontier regions of Ukraine and Russia worst affected by the Chernobyl disaster. All the speakers were unanimous that the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant became the worst man-caused, ecological and humanitarian catastrophe in the history of mankind. All the speakers are convinced that the set of measures should be continued to rehabilitate the affected territories while international organizations should be more involved in these efforts.
