Birthrate in Gomel oblast increases by 20% in January

In January this year, 1,279 babies were born in Gomel oblast, or 20% up from the first month last year. The number of newly-borns in urban settlements increased by 14.2%, in rural areas – by 30.6%, BelTA has been told in the oblast statistics department. The birthrate upward tendency is expected to remain in place as the number of new marriages has been on the rise in the oblast. In 2006, 11,7 thousand marriages were registered, or 8.9% up from 2005. Some 710 marriages were registered in January this year, or 17.7% up over January last year.
