In 2006 some 14,793 babies were born in Gomel oblast, 5% more than in 2005, BelTA learnt in the oblast statistics department. In January 2007 Gomel oblast produced 41,500 tons of milk, an increase of 11% over the same period last year, BelTA learnt in the committee for agriculture and foodstuffs of the oblast executive committee. Over the last 10 years more than 2,000 convicts have received aid of the Gomel oblast social adaptation centre. The institution was one of the first of the kind in Belarus to be set up in Gomel in February 1997.
