Young Belarusian artists draw parallel between Chernobyl accident and Hiroshima tragedy

20 April 2006
An exhibition of pupils of the Children Art School #3 has opened in the Leonid Schemelev art gallery in Grodno. Director of this cultural establishment, arts critic Tatyana Bembel has informed BelTA that the exposition is a final stage of a year-long project “Belarus and Japan: two countries – two tragedies”. The project started with an exhibition in the House of Friendship in Minsk on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima tragedy in Japan. The drawings reflect children’s perception of the two black anniversaries. Boys and girls living in the 21st century drew a parallel between the world’s first nuclear tragedy – A-bomb dropping on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Chernobyl accident. Nevertheless, the works of young artists are full of cheerful images and bright colours. Their works contain a hope of the clear and peaceful future which is shared by the nations of the two distant countries – Belarus and Japan. The exhibition will last till May 15.
