Belarus to streamline benefits on the principle of targeting and justice

16 May 2007
Benefits in Belarus will be streamlined on the basis of targeting and justice, Nikolai Cherginets, the chairman of the permanent commission for international affairs and national security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly, told a press conference in Grodno. He takes part in a session of the commission which discuses the development of cooperation between the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly and the Belarusian diaspora abroad. Nikolai Cherginets said that benefits should be given to the people who really need them, who cannot earn money due to objective reasons. According to him, ‘it is not a normal situation when overwhelming majority of the population of the country is in this or that category of benefit recipients. State financial assistance should be given to certain groups of people, certain individuals. If it is a disabled person, the society should take of him, if it is a large family, it should be provided with housing’.
