Belarus and Russia will never follow western pattern

14 February 2006
Belarus and Russia will never follow the western pattern, deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Gennadiy Seleznev has told reporters after the talks with president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. “There are quite many prejudices and old dogmas in the west. They get used to living according to the notions which they use in their own European community. They level much criticism against Russia saying that it does not apply western standards. Russia will never follow the western pattern. It will follow the Russian pattern while Belarus will take the Belarusian path. It is only then that we will be able to build normal relations when nobody pressurizes anyone, nobody stereotypes the way of living and conduct”, Gennadiy Seleznev said. At the same time he added: “I repeat all the time: you should visit Belarus more often and talk to people. You need to go round Belarus, its regions and see how the country is developing. Even if you look at the statistical data then you will see that the progress is there.” The West would like to see some “orange revolution” or “rose revolution take place in Belarus, Gennadiy Seleznev is sure. “But they do not know Belarus, the deputy stressed. – No revolutions are possible here as there are no social prerequisites for the society to rise against the authorities as it was in Ukraine and Georgia. Those countries were struggling to address the problems of high unemployment rate, extreme poverty and many others. Though the new authorities have failed to resolve these issues, yet they came to power on the back of the discontent of people”. “The situation in Belarus is quite the opposite”, Gennadiy Seleznev stated.
